Drinking at Casa Video? These beers get two thumbs up

Bartenders at Tucson's Casa Film Bar pair our favorite things, movies and beer.

When in Casa Video, do as the movie geeks do ... Drink beer!

Get those Red Vines out of your soda! We're here to show you a better, more entertaining combination.

It's called movies and beer, a triumph of the human spirit in the face of insurmountable mixed drinks. A feel-good romp with a conscience. So without further ado, we present to you The Ultimate Movies + Beer Pairing Guide.

We talked to five of the biggest cinema buffs in town, who just so happen to be bartenders at the new Casa Film Bar. If you haven't been, the spot is a full-scale taphouse inside a video store. Very surreal, almost Lynchian ... but hey these people know their stuff.

So silence your cell phones and let the show begin!

Ty's pick: "K-19: The Widowmaker" with The Mad Czar

The movie: "When Russia's first nuclear submarine malfunctions on its maiden voyage, the crew must race to save the ship and prevent a nuclear disaster."

(Watch the trailer here.)

The beer: "Rich and silky smooth, full mouth-feel delivering rich malts that can evoke chocolaty, coffee, caramel, toasty, roasty and/or burnt aromas and flavors." — From SanTan Brewing Company's website

Ty's take: "Strong, bold, potent Russian imperial stout. Much like the Russian submarine sailors and their captain, The Mad Czar hides its 9.9 percent ABV amongst deep licorice and coffee notes ..."

Corey's pick: "The Man from Nowhere" and Barrio Rojo

The movie: "A quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past takes on a drug-and-organ trafficking ring in hope of saving the child who is his only friend." — from IMDB

(Watch the trailer here.)

The beer: "Barrio Rojo is our newest version of a low hop, very malty, Scottish Ale. ... We took our time to caramelize the brewing sugars to create a low bitterness, sweet beer with notes of caramel brown sugar and cinnamon." — from Barrio Brewing Co.'s website

Corey's pairing notes: "A South Korean action/drama/thriller paired with a red (ale). The film takes you on a journey of revenge, and a race against the clock to save a best friend. Why not enjoy the Rojo while the main character, played by the talented Won Bin, begins seeing red as the takes on organized crime alone."

Kyle's pick: "Game of Thrones" and Old Chub

The show: "While a civil war brews between several noble families in Westeros, the children of the former rulers of the land attempt to rise up to power. Meanwhile a forgotten race, bent on destruction, return after thousands of years in the North." — from IMDB

(Watch the trailer for the upcoming Season 6 here.)

The beer: "This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (8% ABV) is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt." — from the Oskar Blues website

What Kyle thinks of all this: "Nothing better than a nice heavy Scotch ale to warm you in those cold Winterfell nights."

Jazmin's pick: "Fight Club" and Arrogant Bastard

The movie: "An insomniac office worker, looking for a way to change his life, crosses paths with a devil-may-care soap maker, forming an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more..." — from IMDB

(Watch the trailer here)

The beer: "This is an aggressive ale. You probably won't like it. ... Brought forth upon an unsuspecting public in 1997, Arrogant Bastard Ale openly challenged the tyrannical overlords who were brazenly attempting to keep Americans chained in the shackles of poor taste." — from Arrogant Bastard Brewing Co.'s website

Jazmin's musings: “'The first rule about the Fight Club is that you don’t talk about the Fight Club.' Feeling numbed by the status quo as the citizens do in this smokily shot and psychologically tripped movie? Then a deep crimson, dark fruited bottled liquid arrogance might be just what you need to deliver a swift punch to the face of consumerism! (On Tyler’s orders of course) Surrender your masculinity, I mean, join the small craft-brewing Renaissance by liking this beer so much you're inducted into our secret society of Casa Beer Lovers."

Cecilia's pick: "Silence of the Lambs" with Founders Imperial Stout

The movie: "A young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims." — from IMDB

(Watch the trailer here.)

The beer: "Brewed with ten varieties of malted barley, this stout is smooth as silk, yet complex and rich in body. Serve this guy at cellar temperature. Put another log on the fire, sit back and enjoy the friendship of this ultimate winter warmer." — from the Founders Brewing Co. website

Cecilia's inner thoughts: "The dark, complex and smooth flavors go well with this creepy, classic thriller. Curl up on the couch with the two, but make sure you turn off all the lights to get the full effect."

[Optional pairing: Fava beans and a nice Chianti.]
