YouTube has begun offering viewers a collection of almost 100 full-length movies to watch for free.
The catch? Ads. The ad-supported video-on-demand market is up for grabs, and YouTube wants a slice.
YouTube is working with MGM in it's plan to compete with sites like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. YouTube has been streaming select MGM movies for years. But now, rather than buying or paying a few bucks to rent those films, users can watch select movies on demand for free with ads.
The news could help YouTube appease advertisers. Multiple major companies pulled ads from the site in 2017 in what was later dubbed "Adpocalypse" after their promotions were paired with videos featuring hate speech and violent content. This movie deal gives YouTube more premium content to serve ads against.
Most of the movies available aren't new releases or blockbusters. They include titles like Kevin James' "Zookeeper," "The Terminator" and "Dino King," but YouTube says they plan on expanding the selection.
