The Franciscans began work on the mission at Tumacacori in 1800, but the bell tower was never finished. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Tumacácori National Monument on 10 acres of land relinquished by local homesteader Carmen Mendez. Congress expanded the holdings in 1990 and the name was changed to Tumacácori National Historic Park. Go to tucson.com/parks for more on Arizona's National Parks and Monuments.

Niches in the church at the mission in Tumacacori held specific saints for people to pray too. The church was built in 1756 and still stands at Tumacacori National Historic Park, located at 1891 East Frontage Road Tumacacori, Ariz. After the church was abandoned in 1848, the roof was removed and the timber was reused. The current roof was placed in 1921.
