Aspen Fire anniversary: the Mulays

Longtime Summerhaven residents John and Linda Mulay decided to rebuild after losing four of their five homes on June 19, 2003. Their three-story log home was completed in May 2005 and holds many poignant mementos of the devastating fire.

John Mulay and his wife, Linda, spent many hours sifting through the ashes of their cabin to salvage items like this, even though some were barely recognizable. Aluminum cans, glass and rock fused together in twisted pieces, which they now display on shelves and window sills of their rebuilt home in the Loma Linda section of Summerhaven, Ariz.

New homes dot the landscape in Carter Canyon, as seen from the log home built by John and Linda Mulay after the Aspen Fire. Their home's spacious deck faces Carter Canyon and looks over Summerhaven's main drag. One of their  homes — the A-frame in the bottom of this photo — survived the fire and can be seen from their deck.

John and Linda Mulay's only surviving cabin can be seen from the expansive deck of their new log home, which overlooks Summerhaven and Carter Canyon. The Mulays were one of the first families to rebuild after the Aspen Fire devastated Summerhaven in 2003.

Some of the metal toys and items that John and Linda Mulay were able to salvage after their cabin burned to the ground during the Aspen Fire in 2003. The Mulays, who lost four of their five cabins in the blaze, built a three-story log home in the Loma Linda section of Summerhaven. Mementos like these are displayed on bookshelves and window sills throughout their home.

Several cast iron frying pans survived the fire — as one would expect — and are now serving as bird feeders. John and Linda Mulay's home overlooks the village of Summerhaven and Carter Canyon. Strong winds regularly sweep across their wraparound deck, and the frying pans are nailed to the posts just in case.
