Red sky at night, sailor's delight
- Dreamstime
- Updated
Though there's a variation that subs "shepherds" for "sailors," the common expression is "Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning." When sunlight is coming through high-pressure, dust-laden air at a lower angle, you will see the red end of the spectrum. As weather most often moves from west to east, red skies in the evening mean a cloud-free high pressure system is coming toward you, while red skies in the morning could mean the high pressure has passed and rain clouds are on their way.
