Carlos Tolano, with Old Pueblo Stucco, carries materials into the University City Church, 604 N. Sixth Ave. in Tucson, AZ. An electrical fire in the church's attic in November 2013 led to massive smoke and water damage in the historic building that is 34,163 square feet. On Christmas Eve the 400-member non-denominational congregation will have a "Christmas Eve Under the Stars" service in the parking lot of their historical church, which is being renovated because of the fire. The white-brick church was built in 1925 and is north of downtown at 604 N. Sixth Ave. The renovation is an $8 million project, and insurance is covering most of the costs, while the congregation's contribution is $1.5 million. It needs to still raise $700,000. Mostly retired pro golfer Don Pooley, an elder at the church, has organized a fundraising golf tournament Jan. 16 at Omni Tucson National Resort. It is expected to raise about $60,000.
