Stranded Whales
In this photo, released by the Florida Keys News Bureau, a pilot whale rises on a stretcher Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo, Fla. The whale was subsequently loaded onto a truck to be transported to SeaWorld in Orlando. The marine mammal is one of 23 that stranded off the Lower Florida Keys May 5, 2011, and has been convalescing at the Conservancy for the past four months. The 1,100-pound, 12-foot-long female requires managed care as it does not meet federal requirements for release, because her injuries are too severe to withstand the rigors of survival in the wild, officials said.
