The popular beige Christmas aesthetic popular with millennials has fallen out of favor with Gen Z. The generation that loves all things 90s and colorful has eschewed white lights and matching gold ornaments in favor of something a little more fun.

Nostalgic early 2000s Christmas is back

@aver.deedle I usually dont decorate until after thanksgiving but I might change that this year #christmasdecor #nostalgicchristmas #colorfulchristmas #maximalist #maximalistchristmas #nostalgia #interview #fyp #greenscreen #christmaslights ♬ Heading South - Zach Bryan

As TikTok creator @aver.deedle explains, “The theme this year is nostalgic early 2000s Christmas.” If you’re ready to break out of the “Crate and Barrel showroom” look this Christmas, here’s what you need to decorate your tree.

1. Rainbow Christmas Lights

1. Rainbow Christmas Lights

Those perpetually tangled rainbow Christmas light strands you spent hours unraveling as a kid (only to find out a strand was burnt out) are back. Skip the white twinkle lights and opt for a little more color this year.

Buy it here: Multi-color Christmas String Lights, 20 Feet, $10

2. Quirky Mismatched Ornaments

2. Quirky Mismatched Ornaments

Skip the box sets of color-coordinated ornaments this Christmas, and grab whatever catches your eye. Ask relatives for any castoffs they never hang anymore or scour a few thrift stores with a friend and make a day out of decorating.

Buy it here: Maisonette Pink Roller Skate Ornament, $18

3. Random Wrapping Paper

3. Random Wrapping Paper

Many beige Christmas photos feature neatly wrapped gifts in recyclable brown paper. Not this year. Be sure to use way too much tape, and don’t be afraid to mix rolls if you run out of paper on a present.

Buy it here: Hallmark Reversible Wrapping Paper Bundle, $20
