STOKES, James L., PhD
Age 82, born June 4, 1934, died March 7, 2017 Jim died late in the evening of March 7, 2017 from complications of a variety of health problems. Ann, his wife of 62 years and three sons, Thomas of Mobile, AL; William of Tucson; and Daniel of Sierra Vista were present to help him make his journey West. Jim was born in Alamagordo, NM, lived the life of a nomad and eventually landed in Tucson where he met Ann at Tucson High School. With the help of two years in the Marine Corps together they finished their educations. Jim held three degrees at the U of A in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering. He worked many years in R and D private industry and settled down working for the US navy at China Lake, CA. He retired in 1993, returned home to Tucson, only to step into a part-time job as an auditor for labs producing parts for the aerospace industry. This job took him on assignments worldwide for 22 years until failing health kept him home. Jim was a man of integrity revered by his family, love by his many grandchildren, an insatiable reader and an avid Democrat; a storehouse of dry and entertaining wit. The family gives thanks to his doctors and Casa de la Luz Hospice. Donations can be made to any favorite charity.
