Peter Entwisle Pickens

He died peacefully, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion Lee; children, Pamela Elisheva, Linnea Keating and Leon; sister, Patricia Emery; grandchildren, Arthur Bassett, Erik and Keith Keating, Sarah and Rachel Kirschner; and great-grandchild, Andrew Keating. He was born in Kuling, China to Episcopal Church missionaries, Claude and Elizabeth Pickens. He was raised in China, amid many civil uprisings, returning to the US on the Gripsholm exchange ship in 1942 after the Japanese invasion of China. He finished high school in Montvale, New Jersey and attended Colombia University, graduating in 1953. He served in the US Army in Korea from 1950-1952. He attended UCLA and received his PhD in Zoology in 1961. He is a Professor Emeritus in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the U of A where he worked from 1961 - 1991. He published his research on the simple nervous systems of marine animals. In 1968 he was elected a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 9071 E. Old Spanish Trail.
