Geronimo Ramirez, Sr.

Geronimo was the ninth of 11 children of Rafael and Maria Jesus Ramirez and was born in Webb (now Elfrida) Arizona. Mr. Ramirez was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Raymond, Mary, Gregoria, Stella, Andrea, Julian and Gumercindo and granddaughter, Heather. His surviving siblings are brother, Cruz (Maretta) of Scottsdale; sisters, Jane Curiel, Elfrida and Guadalupe (Mel) Thiedemann of Sunnyvale, CA. Geronimo is survived by his children, Dr. Geronimo (Jacque), Rafael (Debra), Gregorio (Lucinda), Gabriel (Teri), Noemi Barios, Raquel (Randy) Ramirez, Christal (Steve) Ferree and Christina (Ramon) Gomes, all of Tucson and stepdaughter, Cynthia (Don) Harris of Gainesville, Florida along with special daughter, Jackie (Dale) Tupper of San Diego, CA. There are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family members who will miss him. He was married to his wife, Martha Webb Ramirez for 20 years. Before his illness they enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. Breeding and raising quarter horses for the track was his favorite pastime. At the age of 17 years Geronimo left the farm to join the United States Navy where he served in the pacific theatre on a troop carrier, the USS Dane. After WWII he worked in several occupations finding he had a natural talent operating heavy equipment. This work took him to Wyoming, California and back to Arizona where he retired from the Operating Engineers. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their condolences may do so with a donations in memory of Geronimo Ramirez, Sr. to the Wounded Warrior Project (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1300 Buffalo Soldier Trail, Sierra Vista, AZ, after the Memorial there will be a gathering of family and friends at the American Legion, 12 Theater St., Sierra Vista, AZ.
