Suzanne (Suzie, Sue) Hamilton Voorhees
Our much loved mother passed over on August 7, 2011 at the age of 93. Mom was born at Ft. Hamilton, N.Y. July 1, 1918. Her father, Percy Clayton Hamilton an officer in the cavalry, died when she was 12. She moved with her family: sister, Jean; brother, Gordon; mother, Beryl and dog, Cinnamon; to Tucson. Mom lived with her grandparents, mother and siblings in the family home built by her grandfather, Fred W. Brown. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1940 and married Paul Voorhees in 1941. They had three children, Burton (Kinga), Barney and Paula. Mom worked as a substitute teacher in Arizona until the family moved to California where she continued her education and received a Special Education teaching degree. She was particularly good with emotionally and physically challenged students. Mom and Dad traveled to Mexico, Hawaii and Europe and after his death in 1987, she also traveled to the Far East and Mexico with her sister, Jean. Mom specifically asked that her obituary be short with no flowery passages or accolades. She would be delighted if all interested in her life's philosophy read Corinthians 13 and Psalms 23. She tried to live her life according to these passages. We and her many friends especially appreciated her outgoing personality, interest in others and the world, and her fabulous sense of humor. An old Mother's Day card she treasured expresses our feelings. "It was a dark and stormy night, but Mom was there, so it wasn't scary at all." In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her name to your favorite charity. Arrangements by NEPTUNE SOCIETY.
