While training African natives to be midwives, Sandy Buffington noticed that newborns provided a hat at birth have a higher survival rate in the harsh climate.
Upon returning home to Tucson, she made it her mission to help as many babies as she could.
Hats are made and purchased by members of the Tuesday Knitting Fellowship at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, along with other local congregations.
People who want to help but but can’t sew or knit can donate to the cause or buy duffel bags to ship the hats in.
More than 33,000 hats have been shipped to different areas of Africa.
If you would like to donate hats or funds, you can drop them off at 8625 E. Tanque Verde Road or mail them to the same address. The ZIP code is 85749.
