The Christmas Story can be confusing. Look at the cast of characters. An unassuming mother and father with their baby — simple shepherds — an angel and three wise men. Think of the musical accompaniment — a sky full of angels singing with cattle moaning. Then there is the ordinary setting of a stable, open field and night sky. It strains the mind to grasp it all.
Of course this scene blows the mind — it is the story of God invading human society. The very narrative portrays heaven and Earth coming together. What an explosive picture is the reality of God coming to save us and make us new creatures. It is the fulfillment of centuries old promises.
God wanted to reveal himself in a different manner to people. They saw him as mysterious and unapproachable. But there is nothing more approachable than a baby. The baby became a winsome man, who spoke life changing words. He was tempted in ways that represented all the challenges that people have, yet he never sinned. Finally, he died on the cross to provide a bridge between God and humankind.

Seeing this story with the eyes of faith clears the confusion in the Christmas story. We see God sending a gift of love in his son. The son loves needy people and reveals the emptiness of religion apart from God’s love. He teaches society how to live lives pleasing to God. Then after a redeeming death, he sends the Holy Spirit to reveal truth and give power to live that truth.
God’s gift of redeeming love started in the manger. Its completion was revealed in Jesus on the cross. Today, we are asked by faith to accept his gift. Then God forgives all our short comings and misdeeds. This starts us on a very different journey to become a very different person. It is not one of self-improvement, but of faith that allows God to change us. The spirit teaches us values that last and gives us power to follow them.
Take time this season to meditate on God’s Christmas gift to you. During hectic Christmas activities, ask God to give you eyes of faith to understand what Christmas is all about. May you discover in the Christmas story God’s gift of love for you.
