Keeping the faith

  • May 31, 2020
  • May 31, 2020 Updated May 31, 2020

Local spiritual leaders of all faiths write encouraging words during the tough times we all find ourselves in.

Being great for the greater good

Rev. Michael T. Bush

Michael T. Bush

Submitted

“Jesus asked his disciples, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest” – Mark 9:33-34

This has been such a trying and confusing time as we deal with a deadly virus, the ease of spread, contradictory governmental directives, nonstop breaking news, and the ensuing fear that has gripped people.

In addition, many are debating who is worth saving and who is worth sacrificing, which has multiplied the stress and challenge. Such assessment of human worth is not a new issue, as we are often jostling for position, competing against one another, and otherwise claiming or clamoring to be greater than someone else.

Have you ever been the greatest in some category? Thought you were? Wanted to be? Perhaps that desire comes from a drive to survive.

If we are perceived as having greater value, then we will more likely obtain plentiful resources and maybe have a longer life.

On the other hand, perhaps this nudge toward greatness is a drive to live the truth of who we really are.

**Explicit language can be heard in this video** Late Friday police officers in riot gear formed a line near the Tucson Convention Center, facing off with hundreds of protesters.

In the Scriptures of my spiritual tradition, we are made in the image of God; we are the great and beautiful children of the creator of the cosmos. Perhaps something within us remembers this oft-buried reality and yearns to live into the greatness that God intends.

And the truth about greatness in the spiritual path I follow, the way of Jesus, is this: God made us not to be greater than others, but greater for and with others.

The disciples of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark were concerned about their own greatness. We, too, might seek to be the greatest gymnasts or professors or health-care providers or plumbers or corporate officers or parents or activists or nation. But without the spirit’s power that heals, transforms, and brings justice, love, and light within us to the world, we often focus on being greater than others and can then do harm to others — which is not great at all.

Jesus reminded his disciples that we follow the one who leads us in the path of humility, the path of making room for the spirit who empowers true greatness in us. On this path, we live lives not greater than others, but greater for and with others, a greatness that does not raise me above you, but a greatness in which we raise up one another.

True greatness is not shoving others aside, sacrificing the marginalized, or making sure we have more than our neighbor. True greatness is living centered in the abundant love, justice, and hope of the divine so we can live as our best selves, our greatest selves, to bring more of the fullness of love, life, healing and justice for and with our neighbors.

Tucson, I believe and pray that we can be truly great in this difficult time.

Showing kindness in the COVID-19 era

King David once asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” — 2 Samuel 9:1, 3. Decades earlier, David had sworn to his friend Jonathan (then Israel’s prince) that he would never cut off his kindness from Jonathan’s family. — 1 Samuel 20:15. Since that promise, Jonathan had died, and David had established himself as king. Decades later, David recalled his nearly forgotten promise and looked for a chance to show God’s kindness for Jonathan’s sake.

We, too, have an outstanding debt to show God’s kindness to others. The Apostle Paul writes, “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law” — Romans 13:8.

We have an ongoing debt to love others because God forgives us. Jesus declared: “Whoever has been forgiven little loves little” — Luke 7:47. The converse is also true; whoever has been forgiven much loves much.

As spiritual rebels, we deserve to spend eternity separated from God. But through Jesus, we’ve been forgiven — Romans 6:23. God counts nothing against us. As a result, we have an outstanding debt we cannot repay. So, God tells us to pay it forward by loving others.

To whom should we show God’s kindness? First, we offer God’s kindness to people who’ve been good to us. Churches currently experience infighting as members debate whether to reopen. Some charge their fellow members with insensitivity to those with preexisting conditions. Others claim their fellow parishioners are caving to fear and lack faith.

Neither group is demonstrating love.

**Explicit language can be heard in this video** Late Friday police officers in riot gear formed a line near the Tucson Convention Center, facing off with hundreds of protesters.

Second, we offer God’s kindness to people who’ve done nothing for us. The directors of our church recently considered whether to send a check to the woman who cleans the school where we meet.

This woman works for the local school district, which still pays her salary.

But she’s missing out on the extra income she received when she opened the school for us.

So we decided to pay her the full amount she would have received, before taxes, for the eight weeks she didn’t work for us. It’s not our fault the school closed its doors to us. It’s not her fault, either. We owe her nothing, but we have an outstanding debt to love others.

Finally, we offer God’s kindness to those who hate us. Social media provides a beautiful opportunity to demonstrate God’s kindness to those with whom we disagree. What if, instead of engaging in debate, we simply said to those who think we’re endangering people’s health or ruining the economy: “I appreciate your perspective, friend. You’ve given me much to think about. You may be right.” Who does that? The one who has an ongoing debt to love others.

If God’s forgiven us, we owe him our lives. The least we can do is love those around us, those who love us, those who don’t care, and those who hate us. That’s how we repay our outstanding debt to God.

Three attitudes we'll need as we recover from COVID-19

Having lived in the shadow of COVID-19 for the past two months, our sights are now set on the gradual return to a new normal, as close as we can get to what we called normal life.

There are public discussions and debates about the nature and pace of our reentry, but I’ll leave that to the experts.

What is certain is that we will need all the emotional and spiritual support we can get as we move forward.

I gained insight from a teaching by the 12th-century Rabbi Ephraim Bar Isaac of Regensburg, Germany (Nachal Kedumim on Torah, Numbers 1:1).

He uses the ancient school of Hebrew numerology (gematria), which assigns a numerical value to each Hebrew letter.

Words with the same numerical value are perceived to have a connection.

He analyzes the opening verse of Numbers, “The Lord spoke to Moses in the Sinai Desert.” The Hebrew word desert (b’midbar) shares a numerical value with the name Abraham.

The word Sinai has the same value as “oni,” which means a humbled person. Together, the numerical value of the words ‘in the Sinai desert’ (b’midbar Sinai) is the same as the word b’shalom — which means “in peace and unity.”

These three “code words” provide us the attitudes we need as we focus on our personal, communal and collective recovery from the pandemic.

1. Faith to Recoup

Abraham is recognized as the father of monotheistic religions.

During his time, the world had fallen to idolatry, and people looked to be comforted by the false gods that they could touch and feel. He reintroduced the belief in one G-d to the world, in spite of enormous hurdles and challenges.

The virus is a powerful adversary. Many lives have been lost (a few I personally knew), our individual freedom has been restricted, education has been curtailed and jobs vanished.

It will take sheer faith in the Creator and determination on our part to recuperate from these losses and confront the unknown that lies ahead.

2. Humility to Recover

Mount Sinai was chosen as the location for the giving of the Ten Commandments as a lesson in humility — it was the lowest mountain in the range, and from there we were able to rise up and head to the promised land.

We are also experiencing a lesson in humility. Life before the pandemic had been a showcase of extravagance.

Enjoying the highest economic prosperity, we flaunted our vacations and luxuries. Now we face a recession and uncertainty. Our humility will help during recovery and bring us through this time.

3. Unity to Revitalize

The Torah described the Jewish people encamped near Mount Sinai with the singular verb “vayichan.” Commentators (Rashi on Exodus 19:2) explain that other encampments “were made in a murmuring spirit and in a spirit of dissension,” but the one at Sinai functioned “as one person and with one mind.”

In many places in the world, including the United States, the pandemic broke out at a time of ideological division and partisanship.

Our self-isolation has triggered a yearning for social interaction and connectivity.

By setting our differences aside, we can use this opportunity to focus on common ground and revitalize ourselves as one nation, under G-d.

Our nation has been hit hard. But with faith, humility and unity, we will recover.
