Homegrown
Don't assume that every perennial or shrub for sale in your local nursery is hardy in your area. Read the plant tag carefully. If you don't see the zone rating, do research before you buy.
River rock
River rock makes an excellent mulch for permanent settings such as a path or an informal patio, but try to place it where leaf litter won't be a problem. To prevent weed growth from below, put down landscape fabric before laying the rock.
Potting plan
To create your own potting mix for cacti and succulents, mix one part sharp builders' sand with two parts of standard potting soil.
