Question: An article on trans fats said one way to determine their presence is to check the ingredients for partially hydrogenated oil. I checked a bag of tortilla chips that lists zero grams of trans fat on the nutrition label but also lists partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredients. How can this be?
Answer: Foods that contain half a gram or less of fat — which includes trans fats, saturated fat and total fat — can be labeled as containing zero grams of fat, said Chris Rosenbloom, professor in the nutrition division at Georgia State University.
So, she said, it's a good idea to watch the serving sizes of foods that contain partially hydrogenated fat in the ingredient list but state zero grams of trans fat on the label.
