MORENCI, Ariz. - The owner of an eastern Arizona copper mine says it will install air purifiers in trailers used as temporary housing to cut the level of formaldehyde inside the units.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold also will give workers with families living in trailers at its Morenci mine the option of transferring to another company mine in Arizona or New Mexico or alternative housing. The company says a health expert from Tulane University recommended the action because children under age 13 are more affected by exposure to formaldehyde.
The company says air purifiers have been proven effective at cutting the levels of formaldehyde, which is a suspected carcinogen and known irritant.
