Shoppers snapped up gift items, toys and needlework Friday at a sale at the West Inc., a volunteer-run retail shop.
Even though the West is a nonprofit endeavor, it functions as a regular retail store, sans sales taxes. Its buyers order from vendors and attend trade shows and markets.
Each year the store's profits are given as grants to local charitable groups, with an emphasis on those that support women and children.
Lots of regular customers from the area shopped for bargains at Friday's event, but many who don't live close by showed up to take advantage of the West's great prices and selection.
After distributing this year's grants, the store will have provided $2 million to more than 42 agencies.
