Hello, Educators in the Tucson area! With education such an important issue for this election I am putting together a Sunday Star editorial page package spotlighting the views of students--set to run Sunday October 26th. Who knows better than the clients the state is serving? This should be a natural for high school students. All ages are welcome to submit their views.
I'm looking for 3 things:
1. Editorial cartoons about education issues drawn by students.
2. Brief opinion pieces about education issues written by students (100 words or less)
3. Questions they'd like to ask the gubernatorial candidates.
Here are the details:
Cartoons
Editorial cartoons about education issues drawn by students must be clear, express an opinion about education in Arizona and be reproducible. The scanned cartoons (grayscale or black and white, 300 dpi) should be emailed to me at tooner@azstarnet.com with the subject line "Student Cartoons Election 2014".
Include the student's name, age, school, and phone number. I will only be able to use 3 or 4 in print. But all will appear online.
Commentaries
Brief opinion pieces about education by students (100 words or less) must express an opinion about the state of education in Arizona and offer a supporting argument. (Examples: the rise of charter schools, public schools, the Arizona Legislature and education, school funding, school performance, assessing the performance of schools and teachers, common core: yes or no, the future of education as you see it...) The brief opinion pieces should be emailed to me at tooner@azstarnet.com with the subject line "Student Views Election 2014".
Include the student's name, age, school, and phone number. I will only be able to use a limited number in print. But all that meet my editing standard will appear online.
Questions
If you have a question you'd like to ask both candidates, Republican Doug Ducey and Democrat Fred Duval, email it to me at tooner@azstarnet.com with the subject line "Student Questions Election 2014".
Include the student's name, age, school, and phone number. If your question is selected I will require a mug shot of the student suitable for print publication.
For more detailed info email me at tooner@azstarnet.com.
Thank you.
David
