Tucson sector U.S. Border Patrol agents in Nogales found an incomplete drug tunnel Friday.Â
The 16-by-16-inch tunnel, which was found in the area west of the DeConcini port of entry, extended about six and a half feet into the United States, authorities said in a news release. In whole, the tunnel was about 25 feet in length.
The tunnel appeared to have come to "an abrupt stop" at a remediation site of another tunnel that was discovered in January, authorities said.Â
A routine bi-national tunnel sweep in conjunction with Mexican law enforcement and the Nogales International Liaison Unit led to the discovery.Â
The bi-national team observed "cinder blocks with fresh mortar within the drainage channel," according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The tunnel will be inspected and monitored until remediation is complete.
