Photos: Banner-UMC trauma workers get a day of firefighter training
Tucson Fire Department hosted employees from the Banner-University Medical Center Level 1 Trauma center and Burn Program for a firefighter experience at Tucson Police Academy in Tucson, Ariz. on December 16th, 2019.
Employees were suited up as if they were firefighters with gear and oxygen tanks. They first learned how to handle a water hose. Then they went through a maze similar to what firefighters move through when in tight spaces. Then the employees used spreaders and cutters to force open car doors and were, also, fitted for oxygen masks. Then they rappelled down a 75ft tower and fought a fire inside a 260 degree burn room.
This is the first time TFD auctioned off this experience at the annual Tucson Firefighters Ball.Â

For firefighter recruits, the burn room can reach up to 400 degrees.

Firefighters are required to keep their face shaved due to safety reasons. Facial hair prevents the mask from sealing air tight which means firefighters will loose air faster.
