RUSSIA GREAT PURGE
A barge carrying an 11-meter wooden cross, made on the Solovky Islands, home of one of the first Soviet labor camps, to commemorate victims of mass political purges by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, is towed by a tugboat along the Moskva River on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007. The cross will be erected on Wednesday at the Butovo range south of Moscow, where more than 20,000 people were executed by firing squads in 1937-38, as part of events planned through out this year to mark the 70th anniversary of the Great Purge of 1937, when millions were labeled "enemies of the state" and executed without trial or sent to labor camps.
