Craigslist founder gives millions to charitable causes
In the seven years since leaving the online marketplace that he founded, Craigslist, Craig Newmark says he's trying to stay focused on spending the fortune he made from the company to better humanity. "I plan to spend everything during my lifetime," he said sitting in the library of his Manhattan townhouse. "I think our species and our civilization need to get through the next 20 years or so in good shape. So that's where I'm spending my energies." To Newmark, that has meant donating to various causes including donating money to help veterans, promote research in cybersecurity and promoting ethics and diversity in journalism. He says in total, he's donated "maybe a couple hundred million" dollars toward causes to advance freedom of the press -- including donating money to the journalism school at The City University of New York, which now bears his name
