Many associate El Niño with more frequent, intense storms on the West Coast. Places like Lake Tahoe and Big Bear enjoy an abundance of snow, and drivers in Los Angeles suffer when rain obstructs the already congested highways.
However, El Niño patterns in the winter of 1965 were unusual. El Niño bypassed most of the West Coast and instead brought heavy snowstorms to Alaska. The 1965 El Niño is an excellent example of how unpredictable this weather pattern can be.
