Pima County’s population was only shown as 980,263 in the newest U.S. Census data released today, compared to numerous earlier, unofficial local, state and federal estimates showing the population had exceeded a million as long ago as late 2006.
Even though the county didn't end up at a million, its population still grew by 16.2 percent between 2000 and 2010, the Census Bureau said.
Pinal County's population boomed by 109 percent, reaching 375,770.
Tucson is the second-largest city in the state with 520,116 people, behind Phoenix's 1.44 million but ahead of Mesa's 439,041. Tucson's population grew by 6.9 percent over the decade, compared to Phoenix's 9.4 percent growth.
