Man using wheelchair fatally struck crossing Tucson street

Tucson police gave the following account in a news release:

Shortly before 4 a.m. Jan. 6, officers were called to the area of East Ajo Way and South Fair Avenue for reports of a collision involving a 2013 Ford Edge and the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Detectives determined that the Ford Edge was traveling east on Ajo when it struck the man, who was not in or near a marked or unmarked crosswalk.

"Mid-block crossing by the pedestrian is the major contributing factor of the collision," and no citations have been issued.
