Presidential candidate John B. Connally spoke to an enthusiastic crowd at the Republican Trunk 'n Tusk dinner on April 23, 1979. Addressing the nation's energy needs, the former Texas governor said the country had sufficient nuclear power, coal, oil and gas to meet our needs. Connally told the group that even if it meant easing pollution standards, coal should be used in all electrical plants. "I like clean air," he said, "but I don't want my last breath of clean air to come because I'm starving to death because I can't make a living."
