The new, modern streetcar system in Tucson will be called SunLink.
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild made the announcement Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony at the University of Arizona. The name SunLink relates the streetcar line to the Sun Tran bus system.
The $196 million project is expected to begin operations late next year. The four-mile route will connect the University of Arizona, the Fourth Avenue area and downtown.
Construction began last week. For about four months, Congress Street will be closed between Toole and Stone avenues, and Fourth Avenue will be closed between Sixth Street and University Boulevard.
Sidewalks remain open, and businesses and special events are accessible.
