More than 200 kids under age 15 drown, on average, between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, according to data compiled in 2010 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Home Safety Council.
Last week, a 6-year-old girl drowned on Tucson's northwest side at a community gathering, where family and friends were all around. Often, officials say, victims can't yell for help when they're in need. Keeping kids safe around water is a tough job, but there are many ways to help secure your pool area.
In 80 percent of child drowning cases in 2009, a lack of supervision was listed as a factor that could have prevented the fatality, according to a study by the Arizona Department of Health Services. In 66 percent of cases, blocking access to water also could have helped prevent a drowning.
