License plate frames that cover the "Arizona" at the top of the plate will become illegal once a new law takes effect Thursday.
That means motorists who like to display frames with their favorite sports team or alma mater might be cited if they are pulled over by a police officer.
The law is a result of an amended state statute that describes the proper placement and display of license plates.
If a person is cited, the fine is $160 in Tucson and $151 in the county, authorities said.
The new law is intended to help law enforcement and civilians identify a license plate as an Arizona plate, according to a Tucson Police Department press release.
The law only applies to vehicles registered in Arizona.
