City property taxes in North Tonawanda will rise in 2021, but not as much as Mayor Arthur G. Pappas originally proposed.
The tax levy will rise 3.75% under terms of a revised city budget that the Common Council approved last week by a 3-2 vote.
The negative votes came from the at-large aldermen, Republican Robert E. Pecoraro and Democrat Austin J. Tylec.
Both men said they opposed any tax increase at all, given the financial pressures residents face as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pappas' original budget called for a 6.52% tax levy increase from the 2020 figure. The eventual 3.75% hike still exceeded the state tax cap, but the Council had voted unanimously in October to break the cap if necessary.
General fund spending will total $38.6 million, a year-to-year increase of $500,000, or 1.3%. The budget assumes that the city's level of state aid will be the same as was scheduled for this year.
