Sandhill cranes - with wingspans of up to 7 feet - are swooping into wetlands south of Willcox this month.
Hundreds of the big birds have arrived so far on their annual migration from mountain states and parts of Canada. Last winter, biologists reported a record 40,499 cranes in the area before their departure in late February and early March.
Wildlife officials said they're "cautiously optimistic for another big year."
"Part of the beauty is that we're commonly associated with arid desert, and here we have a majestic wetland bird flying into the area," said Mark Hart of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. "It's a beautiful paradox."
The crane migration plays a big role in the Wings Over Willcox birding and nature festival, set for Jan. 12-16.
One place to see cranes in daybreak takeoffs is at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, some 45 miles south of Willcox. To get there from Tucson, take Interstate 10 east, past Benson, and exit onto U.S. 191 before reaching Willcox. Drive south on U.S. 191, past Elfrida, and then follow Central Highway south to Davis Road. Go west on Davis Road to Coffman Road and follow Coffman Road south to the wildlife area.
