A Tucson man who stole a pair of night-vision goggles while working as a contract mechanic for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and sold them on eBay has been charged with theft of government property.
James Williams, 37, of Tucson, stole a pair of night-vision goggles with a carrying case and battery worth $6,972 while working at the Customs and Border Protection aircraft facility in Tucson, a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
He sold them on eBay for $3,700 and kept the money, the release said.
Williams has been summoned to appear before a U.S. Magistrate judge on May 22 for arraignment on the charges.
A conviction for theft of government property carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both, the release says.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement's office of professional responsibility conducted the investigation with help from the FBI Crime Lab and ITT Industries.
