YUMA, Ariz. — A go-cart carrying 180 pounds of marijuana crossed into the United States and fled back to Mexico after unloading $90,000 worth of drugs.
The incident occurred Thursday night near Yuma and led to a Border Patrol pursuit of the smugglers.
Authorities say smugglers moved the marijuana from the go-cart to a truck, but two Mexican nationals in the pickup ran back into Mexico after agents chased them.
Agents seized the empty vehicle and found several bundles of marijuana.
"We had agents search the area for the subjects, and no one was found," agent Richard Withers said. "They tracked the footprints of all the subjects heading back to Mexico."
The majority of the marijuana smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico comes through Arizona. Agents in the Border Patrol's Yuma Sector last year seized nearly 53,000 pounds of pot, while the Tucson Sector seized nearly 1 million pounds.
