"It kind of ran out of some fuels," Mabery said of that portion of the wildfire that has left a nightly glow of orange flames that can be seen across Tucson each night. "It got into that Sonoran desert ecosystem. It just doesn't have the ability to continue to back through there."
The wildfire started by lightning on June 5 had grown to nearly 66,000 acres by Tuesday morning and officials said it was about 33% contained.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department will monitor the amount of traffic going up the mountain and delays are expected.
The Westridge Fire, in the Tortolita Mountains northwest of Tucson near Marana and Oro Valley, stood at 480 acres on Tuesday.
