As We See It: The Skyway

  • Jul 9, 2021
  • Jul 9, 2021 Updated Feb 26, 2026

Love it or hate it, it is hard to avoid and it seems to never be too far away from a headline. Built in 1953, this 1.4-mile-long, 110-foot-tall, limited-access bridge is known locally as the Skyway. It begins at the Inner Harbor downtown, crosses the Buffalo River and touches down as Route 5 in the Outer Harbor.

"As We See It," a series by The Buffalo News photography staff, will take a fresh look at local landmarks. Each of our photographers will provide their unique perspective.

Analysis: Kathy Hochul could determine the fate of these 5 Buffalo projects

The Buffalo Niagara region relies on the state's deep pockets to fund major economic development initiatives. As Hochul replaces the resigning Gov. Andrew Cuomo, that commitment shouldn't change.
