The All Souls Procession in Tucson on Nov. 3, 2019, was expected to attract nearly 150,000 people. The event has grown from humble beginnings in 1990, when Tucson artist Susan Johnson was searching for a way to honor her father and work through her grief after his death. She was joined by about 25 people.
The procession used to travel up 4th Avenue, then moved to 6th Ave. to Alameda to avoid the Modern Streetcar. In 2017, it moved to the current location in Barrio Hollywood, west of I-10 and south of Speedway.
The All Souls Procession is not associated with All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) or Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), though procession participants sometimes borrow symbolism from those traditional events.
