  • Dec 29, 2020 Updated Dec 29, 2020

The Pinto Creek Bridge project on U.S. Highway 60 between Miami and Superior. The existing steel arch bridge in the background was built in 1949 and no longer meets modern highway safety guidelines. It is being replaced with a concrete bridge as part of a project managed by the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Completion is set for mid-2021. The original bridge cannot be safely or economically rehabilitated for other uses, so it will be demolished.

The new bridge will be 44 feet wide, with 12-foot lanes. The updated bridge will also have 10-foot shoulders which the original structure lacks. The total length of the updated Pinto Creek Bridge replacement will be 695 feet. The tallest pier is 158 feet.

Traffic continues along Pinto Creek Bridge on US 60 between Miami and Superior as construction continues on the replacement bridge, on Dec. 17, 2020. The new bridge is planned to be finished sometime in mid-2021. It will replace the more than 70-year-old steel bridge currently in use. The new bridge will be 44 feet wide, with 12-foot lanes. The updated bridge will also have 10-foot shoulders which the original structure lacks. The total length of the updated Pinto Creek Bridge replacement will be 695 feet. The tallest pier is 158 feet.   The original bridge is being replaced because it was built in 1949 and is well beyond its design life of 50 years after being exposed to the elements and vibration from traffic. The new Pinto Creek Bridge has been designed and constructed to last at least 50 years.
