The Mission School
The Mission School at Mission San Xavier del Bac is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year. The school, established in 1864, teaches children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Although many Tohono O’odham students from San Xavier District attend the school, it also serves students from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and other surrounding areas. At recess students are not allowed to sit down and are encouraged to run around and play. The principal, Shirley Kalinowski, says the kids are sitting in their classrooms for much of the day and wants to promote a healthy lifestyle.
