Readers of the Star's weekly Thursday editions for East, Foothills and Northwest will appreciate some of this old images of the areas.
Sabino High School
SAbino High School — 1974
Students ate their lunch on picnic tables while much of Sabino High School was still under construction in April 1974. The school on the northeast side was overcrowded early in its existence.
Foothills Mall
Foothills mall — 1982
The interior of the Foothills Mall is almost completed in this July 1982 photo. This area is the center court and it has been remodeled a couple of times since the mall’s opening.
Oro Valley sign

Saguarontosaurus
‘SAguarontosaurus’ — 1973
This saguaro cactus on Soldier Trail looked an awful lot like an elephant. The Tucson Citizen called it a “Saguarontosaurus.” The spiny creature stalked the desert east of town, the newspaper wrote.
Colossal Cave
Colossal Cave — 1956
Joe Maierhauser found himself in a tight spot at Colossal Cave in April 1956.
Tanque Verde tavern
Tanque verde mystery — 1958
This previously unpublished photo is a mystery. Information with the photo reads: “Tanque Verde Tavern, Tanque Verde Bar dining room.” But we can’t figure out where this place was or is located.
Campbell and Skyline
Skyline drive and campbell — 1982
This aerial photo shows the intersection of Skyline Drive and Campbell Avenue (lower left) in 1982. The bank is the only building at the intersection.
Heavy December rains
SAbino Canyon — 1972
Heavy rains flooded Sabino Canyon on Dec. 29, 1972. Forty-four people were evacuated from the canyon and search teams rescued a 15-year-old from the floodwaters.
