The talk of over the next few days likely will focus more on the heat than thunderstorms, the National Weather Service in Tucson says.
The summer heat is toppling weather records in Tucson and Phoenix this week.
Heat wave pushes Tucson Electric Power beyond its forecasted peak usageFor Star subscribers: Record-high temperatures in Tucson this week pushed peak demand at Tucson Electric Power beyond forecasts but the utility says it has plenty of power.
Tucson Electric Power says it may take a couple of days to restore power to about 800 of the affected customers. More than 36 poles were knocked down.
As of Tuesday, Tucson set a new record with 40 consecutive days of 100-plus-degree temperatures. If forecasts hold, this record will extend to 45 straight days by Sunday.
TEP reported 50,000 customers without power; Davis-Monthan Air Force base said it was among them. Winds damaged buildings, parks.
And Tucson's high temperature Saturday of 89 degrees, was the first below 90-degree day here since June 1.
An excessive heat warning is in effect here until 9 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Tucson says.
Tucson has eked out a slightly above-normal rainfall total for the monsoon season so far, heading into September.
Tucson's expected official monsoon rainfall this year is 4.73 inches for the period that runs from June 15 to Sept. 30. The typical amount is 5.69 inches, officials said.
