A Tucson police motorcycle officer was seriously injured Thursday when he was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer rig on Interstate 10.
Officer Mike Ryan was conducting traffic enforcement duties when he attempted to merge into the right lane on I-10 near Valencia Road about 11 a.m. and collided with the rig, causing him to be thrown from his motorcycle, said Officer Quent Mehr, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Ryan, a 25-year veteran with the Tucson Police Department who was planning to retire sometime next year, was flown to University Medical Center. He underwent surgery and was in serious condition.
His injuries were not considered life-threatening, police spokesman Sgt. Matt Ronstadt said.
