Safe hiking
● Always tell a responsible person where you'll be hiking and exactly when you expect to return. Leave a map or other information showing your route - and don't deviate from that route. Don't leave the trail.
● Carry ample food and water: 1 gallon of water per person per day. Drink lots of water before you go and keep hydrated throughout the hike.
● Bring a first-aid kit, hat, sunscreen, map, lighter and seasonal clothing.
● Bring several types of emergency signaling equipment: a mirror, whistle, brightly colored clothing or fabric and a cell phone if you have one.
● Remain calm if you're lost or injured. Panic can make the situation worse by leading to bad decisions.
