The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to accept long-serving Sheriff Clarence Dupnik’s resignation and appoint Chief Deputy Chris Nanos to the vacated post.
Supervisors voted to appoint Nanos after some discussion about whether a larger public process of vetting candidates should have been conducted.
Supervisor Richard Elías said because of the importance of the position of sheriff, he would have liked to see a public nominating process used.
“If you’re going to be appointed to the supervisors or one of the row officers of the county you should have to go through a process,” Elías said.
Dupnik's last day on the job is scheduled for July 31. He has been sheriff since 1980.
