A 21-year-old Tucson man, Fernando Bedoy, was sentenced to eight years in prison Monday for the kidnapping and slaying of a 19-year-old man.
According to prosecutors, Cody Martinez, 23, and a group of friends kidnapped Francisco Aguilar in 2003 in the course of stealing drugs from him. Some of the group then took Aguilar out into the desert where Martinez beat and shot him to death, then set his remains on fire.
On Monday, Bedoy, who entered a plea agreement and testified against Martinez during Martinez's trial last month, was sentenced to eight years for kidnapping, said Pima County Superior Court spokesman David Ricker.
Martinez was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He will also face between seven and 21 years for kidnapping when he is sentenced Friday.
Johnathon Summey-MontaƱo is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the case. Timothy Lee Nogales, 20, Joshua Carpena, 20, and Paul Kelso, 23, pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping and are serving 2.5 to 8.75 years in prison. Michael A. Lopez, who also pleaded guilty to kidnapping, is awaiting sentencing.
