One of Danielle Mouw's goals is to one day turn Flamenco Sonora into a non-profit organization so she can offer workshops for free. Mouw's Flamenco Sonora came out of a thesis that she researched and completed as a University of Arizona undergraduate.
Flamenco originated in southern Spain with Gypsies. It is an art form that consists of cante (song), baile (dance) and toque (guitar). Mouw says the singing directs the dance and guitar.
On Saturday, Mouw held a workshop at Anamax Park and Recreation Center in Sahuarita. The three-hour workshop consisted of basic flamenco dance and rhythm for kids and a more complex choreography class for those with more dance experience.
Guitar lessons were offered by Manny Brito, an accomplished Latin jazz musician and flamenco guitarist.
Mouw plans to hold more workshops in the future. She wants to expose people to this art form that she says is about finding your own style and communicating it to others through the song and dance.
