Children squealed with delight as the mouse in "Splat the Cat" by Rob Scotton wiggled his tail during Nook Color story time last week at Barnes & Noble, 5130 E. Broadway.
Nook Color is a color version of the Barnes & Noble eBook reader. The store's weekly children's story time featured the device for the first time on May 4.
Young readers focused intently on the hand-held reader.
"I like the picture and the sounds," said Cray Brown, 5, who quickly figured out how to turn the "pages" and click on the interactive icons.
Many of the parents enjoyed watching their children get excited about the stories.
"Books and technology - it doesn't get any better," laughed mother Sarah Ausland as she watched her year-old daughter Stella react to the story she was reading. "Now we know what we can ask Grandma and Grandpa for."

The weekly story time shows children the latest books. The store often organizes crafts and offers a snack during the event.
"Anything that gets kids excited about reading is a good thing," said Valerie Burnside, the store's community-relations manager.
