Keeping culture alive and exposing others to the food, dance and music of the Slavic heritage were reason to celebrate Friday and Saturday at the ninth annual Tucson Slavic Festival at St. Melany Byzantine Catholic Church, 1212 N. Sahuara Ave.
One of three Byzantine parishes in Arizona, and the only one in Tucson, St. Melany's celebrates the church's Eastern European roots the first week of October with food, vendors, crafts, children's events and more.
At the event Bob and Mary Hurd worked together on a Ukrainian Easter egg under the watchful eye of Pat Hayles, who has been sharing her knowledge of the pysanky at the festival for three years.
"Everybody remembers the eggs the czar had done by Fabergé," Bob Hurd said, "This is more folk art than Fabergé and we were interested in it."
