The Arizona Department of Education has been awarded a nearly $16 million grant to fund the creation and expansion of public charter schools.
The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter Schools Program. Eight states were awarded a total of $125 million — money that will be used to support state-level grant competitions.
Another $32 million was invested in 12 high-quality charter management organizations that serve students from low-income families for replication and expansion efforts. None are located in Arizona.
Since the program’s inception, the U.S. Department of Education has invested over $3 billion in the charter school sector, and worked to strengthen accountability and quality of charter schools that are creating opportunities for students facing challenging circumstances.
